You’ll see signs pointing you further up the trail for the lake, but to your right you’ll notice a perfectly alpine-lake-colored alpine lake that will be very tempting to check out. However, this is a very fragile meadow and even though there are user trails marching out to a viewpoint, please stay on the trail to Iceberg Lake - it’s worth the wait! A very short climb from here takes you to a sign pointing to pit toilets to the left and the lake to the right. We hung right and I literally stopped in my tracks and gasped when we saw it. It is actually breathtaking. Giant chunks of ice bobbed in the perfectly blue-green water and the light was shockingly bright reflecting off the surrounding mountain. As we stood there staring in awe, we noticed movement to our right and realized that off the trail a little ways were a mama and baby moose! We were a safe distance away, so we pulled out the zoom lens and snapped some shots of them grazing. It was far enough away that it was safe to quickly head up the trail, but we paused a good distance away with the zoom lens and binoculars to watch the bear. We’re still not totally sure if it was a grizzly or a black bear - it was pretty small, but it had the telltale hump of the grizzly bear - and there were 3 cubs!! At one point, mom crossed to the other side of the trail and the cubs tried to climb up a tree together. One of them sat back on her haunches to chew on a flower and it was literally the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I had planned on jumping in the lake, but the lake itself was closed due to salmon spawning and grizzly bear activity. The viewpoint was open, however, so we headed out to see the lake from afar. The trail climbs up from the visitor center on a wooden boardwalk (and is so very picturesque). It crossed some marshy land and took us past a couple small waterfalls and what was left of a few big snowbanks. As we approached the viewpoint, we started seeing mountain goats everywhere! There was just one mountain goat kid but tons of adults, wandering around and hanging out in the shade. We watched a couple people approach them to take photographs as we were walking up, even though there are signs EVERYWHERE explaining why you should never approach wildlife. Please don’t do this, y’all! Get a telephoto lens and binoculars and enjoy them from a safe distance. It stresses the animals out and it’s not safe! We didn’t see a single bear from the viewpoint even though the lake was apparently swarming with them (at least that’s what we assumed since they closed it). As we headed back to the visitor center in the beautiful fading light, however, we approached a group of people watching something in the distance. They pointed out a lone grizzly on the hill to the south who had been wandering around for some time. We stopped and watched him for a while before continuing on down Going-to-the-Sun Road for sunset. We crossed back into the trees (with a mom and baby mountain goat sighting), and then started up the final, steep push to the glacier. As soon as you crest the hill, the view is amazing. Don't forget to turn around to take in the view of all the lakes you just hiked past! The glacier itself was pretty much just a lake this late in the season, but no less impressive. I ran down to dip my feet in the freezing water right away and then we enjoyed some hard earned snacks. Pro tip: head down toward the toe of the glacier to avoid some of the crowds. If you can, get permits and campgrounds starting on March 15, during their initial release (check out backcountry camping info here). We decided to do the trip a little last minute and did a bunch of research to make sure we’d be able to get camping spots - and then weren’t able to at all. Basically, if you want to backpack, you have to be at a ranger station at 7AM two days before you want to hit the trail. For a multi-stop trip, you definitely will want to have a backup plan because the chances of getting all the walk-in spots you want are pretty slim. On the hill just north of the hotel, an adult grizzly and her two cubs were running around, so we grabbed the binoculars and watched them for the better part of an hour before heading out to our campsite. The following morning, we passed through the town of Babb on our way in to Many Glacier. Stop there and get gas just so you can meet the local welcoming crew, two giant puppies that just run wild around the town and want to say hi to everyone! Before the park gates, the land is all for cow grazing, and there are cows hanging out on the hillsides and in the road everywhere - don’t get too excited when you see them - I kept thinking they were bears. Also on the road in, a giant bull moose was lumbering along in the grass so we pulled over to watch him for a while. Those things are BIG! Our hike for the day was Grinnell Glacier, and even though we arrived early, the parking lot was nearly full. We decided to head down Going-to-the-Sun Road for sunset, stopping for another hike on the way. We took our time leaving Many Glacier and hopped on the road just past Saint Mary Lake. Less than a mile into the drive, there was a bear jam on the side of the road (everybody stops abruptly, because bears!), and we saw two grizzlies running around and playing on the hillside. The walls are just lined with ferns, making the whole place a verdant green. In the late afternoon sun, it was almost neon, it was so bright. The trail winds through the canyon and getting your feet wet quickly becomes unavoidable. People had thrown down logs and branches to walk across, but at one point I decided to just tromp through the middle of it and it really wasn’t so bad. Waterproof boots or hiking sandals would be a good idea for this trail if you’re doing it off season. I had read before we arrived that the trail was partially closed due to log jams. It’s normally a loop, but we got about a mile and a half in and the river got a little deeper and we decided to turn around. That mile and a half was brilliant though, scrambling over logs, running through the freezing cold water and admiring the ferns (whose ancestry, as the informational sign will tell you, can be traced back 325 million years)! Changing out of our wet shoes after the hike, we hopped back in the car and headed toward our camp spot at Elk Prairie. It’s just a short drive back out on the 101 to the turn and the Prairie Creek State Park. The road runs along another meadow that the elk like to hang out in. This is another area that has bridges during the summer but not in the off season. Heading back up the trail, we saw the first people we’d seen all day heading down as the afternoon was starting to heat up. We were glad to get the uphill out of the way before it was too hot. If you’re so inclined, the LadyBird Johnson Grove hike is on the way back out to the 101 from here, but we were a little short on time, so continued north. I would highly recommend returning to the Newton B. Drury Parkway to take the scenic byway back out of the park. We stopped at the Corkscrew Tree and the Ah-Pah Interpretive trail on the way out, but if you have more time there are so many more hiking opportunities in this part of the park! If you are in the area between March and the beginning of May, it’s prime whale watching time, so if you’re lucky you’ll see a few of them on a mellow wind day. About an hour south of Crescent City is the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center, which is where our next stop was. Going south on the 101, you pass in between sections of state and national park. There are lots of scenic byways and places to stop at (all advertised on billboards as you drive along). We made it to the visitor center and popped inside to check it out, then walked out to sit on the beach and do some planning, now that we were armed with maps. Checking out the coast is definitely a must while you’re there, whether it’s just the visitor center beach or the beautiful Gold Bluffs Beach further north. We were actually headed in the direction of Gold Bluffs next, to the number one hike I had on my list for the trip, Fern Canyon. During the summer months, they put foot bridges in on this hike, but in the winter, it’s up to you to find a way across the flowing river. I had only ever done a hike where the trail is the stream in Oregon, so I was pretty excited to find one that felt like home in California. From the visitor center, we headed north on 101 and made a left onto Davison Road. You’ll pass Elk Meadow which, true to its name, was full of elk when we drove in. We paused to watch them for a while and continued on as the road turned to gravel. It’s a pretty rough road in, and as you wind down toward the beach, you’ll eventually come to a guard stand. The rangers were very helpful, recommended some hikes and places to go while we were in the park, and sent us on our way. The amount that Oregon has changed over millions of years is pretty crazy, and it’s really interesting to read about what the landscape and wildlife used to be like based on all the fossils they’ve found. While I’m not usually one for museums (how could you not be outside?!), I highly recommend the Paleontology Museum if you have any interest in Oregon natural history (or geology, or archaeology…). On the way we saw a herd of antelope and tons of deer! During the spring months, the Painted Hills is not a very popular destination, so when we arrived at the monument a couple hours before sundown, there were just a few cars there ahead of us. We drove to the very end of the road in the park and worked backwards, starting at Red Hill and checking out all the short trails on the way back to the main attraction. We planned to do the Carroll Rim Trail in time to catch the sunset - the way the shadows land over the Painted Hills is just too much. Starting from the parking area at the top of the Hills, the trail climbs up 400 feet in about ¾ of a mile to an overlook of the valley. It’s really quite stunning! St. Helens If you can hike, you can climb Mount St. Helens! That's not to say you shouldn't be prepared - it is a very arduous climb and you should do your research, and definitely do some training if you’ve never climbed a mountain before. You'll need to know how to use an ice axe and crampons (it does often stay snowy throughout the summer), but you don't even have to buy them - you can rent them from the Mountain Shop! In the summer, Monitor Ridge will be your climb, starting from the Climber's Bivouac. Permits go on sale in spring and they go fast (you can find more info here). It is 10 miles round trip in summer and the trail will take you through a couple miles of forest, a giant boulder field (my favorite part), through the last 1,000 feet of sticky ash (or snow, depending on the year), and finally to the crater rim. Every time I’ve been, there have been rangers available for questions, once even with a telescope set up to check out a herd of elk. The road to this section of the mountain is not open in winter and it's a bit of a longer drive from any direction, but well worth it! There's a very steep set of stairs set into the side of the hill near the parking lot which will get you enough elevation to take in both the mountain in the distance and Spirit Lake below you. My favorite trail from here, though, is the Loowit Falls Trail. Starting from Trail 216D, you head around the ridge for views of Mount Adams across the hills further east. It's easy to get distracted by this view until you come around a bend and Mount St. Helens is looming huge in front of you. The Loowit Trail circumnavigates the mountain, so make sure you're paying attention to directions (everything is well signed) to make sure you don't end up farther away than you meant to! Switching to trail 216E and following the signs for the falls, you'll head up and down some mellow hills through the blast zone along the base of the mountain. The falls are the closest point you can get to the crater without a guide, so enjoy the view! The falls themselves are spectacular and from the viewpoint you can look back toward Spirit Lake and the Johnston Ridge Observatory. The Boundary Trail is my favorite hike from this spot. It starts out from the parking lot of the visitor center (head in the opposite direction of the building, although you can hop on it from near the visitor center too if you're already up there). The views of the mountain are spectacular the whole way down this trail. You can take it for several miles where it connects with a few other trails, eventually leading you toward Spirit Lake. A section of trail goes along a ridge here with quite a steep drop off. Last I saw, a landslide had closed that section, but if you're heading around toward the Mount Margaret back country you'll be good to go. Because you're high above the blast area on these trails, you'll have an amazing view of a popular elk grazing area as well. The Ape Caves are tucked away on this side of the mountain as well as June Lake, the Lava Canyon suspension bridge, and the climber's bivouac for both winter and summer summit climbs. I love the Lava Canyon hike - short but sweet, it leads you down toward a wild river and an amazing suspension bridge. From there, you have the option of climbing down into the canyon for a longer hike along the Smith Creek Trail, or you can make a small loop and head back along the river. It's also a short enough hike that you can squeeze in one or two more since there are so many on this side of the mountain! It the highest point on the mountain that you can drive to and sits at 6,400 feet. Although I’ve seen the least wildlife here (and the wildlife is one of the best parts of visiting the park), it is probably my favorite section of Mt. Rainier. There is an abundance of trails that leave from behind the small visitor center. Even the drive up is beautiful - make sure to stop at the Sunrise view point, which is a sharp curve just before the visitor center - and is a wonderful place to take in both the sunrise and sunset. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fc5b5f4ea4a794d56662936/1611990958141-L0B4AJXW1L20KUICARBB/img_8457.jpg Blog - Mount Rainier National Park - Crystal Mountain Crystal Mountain is the farthest east side of the park, and is also home to the ski resort. Last I was there was mid April, and ski season was pretty much done. However, you can still take the gondola to the top and have a beer at the restaurant in view of the mountain. We were greeted with a big lenticular cloud, fog in the valleys, and blue layers of mountains as far as the eye could see. While I haven't done much else but gawk at the view on this side of the park, I would still highly recommend checking it out, especially if you ski or snowboard! https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fc5b5f4ea4a794d56662936/1611990748405-VHG13NR6IOHVEJCTJQ7W/img_8610.jpg Blog - Mount Rainier National Park - Longmire The only entrance open year round is the Nisqually entrance in the southwest corner of the park, and the closest visitor center is at Longmire. Longmire has an inn, a mini convenience store, and a museum. It's definitely the most family friendly part of the park, with multiple shorter trails close to the little town. My favorite is the Rampart Ridge Trail, which begins at the Trail of the Shadows trailhead. You can do the trail as an out-and-back, or make it a loop by connecting with the Wonderland Trail. The Trail of the Shadows is lined with informational signs and some interesting tidbits about the mineral springs which bubble up in rust colors from the ground. Past the springs, the trail climbs steeply up into a series of switchbacks. You'll be in the trees most of the way, but the trail was nearly empty when we climbed up through the fog. Even with the cloud cover and fog, the views were incredible when we reached the top of the ridge. There were plenty of greyjays flying around trying to steal our food (they're always fun to watch and will definitely divebomb you for snacks). Although this hike is a lot of uphill, it comes in at just over 5 miles, so not bad if you're doing some exploring in the village and want to spend a couple hours hiking. https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5fc5b5f4ea4a794d56662936/1611991816804-BJXSKT5I1DQUCHAWLA8B/IMG_1983.jpg Blog - Mount Rainier National Park - Mowich Lake The far north western side of the park is a little more wild and a little less visited. It's prime backpacking country, or a good spot to do an extra long day hike. I would highly recommend the Spray Park Trail. Spray Park is wildflower central in the summer, and is usually bursting with wildlife as well. First, you'll have to get to Mowich Lake. The gravel road out to the lake is not plowed in the winter, so the window for this side of the park is small as well. If you need backcountry permits or any ranger information, be sure to stop at the ranger station in Carbon River before heading up the gravel road, as it's a bit out of the way. You can also back country camp, but you must see a ranger to get a permit. Always check the ranger station hours to make sure you'll be able to get a permit if you're planning a trip. The Mount Rainier website as well as the National Park Service site are incredibly useful tools and are full of information about hikes, camping, road closures, weather, and anything else you may need to know. I’ve done backcountry camping quite a few times here and have yet to find a campsite I don't like, so you really can't go wrong if you're ready for a little adventure. This part of the park sits at over 5,000 feet and boasts some breathtaking alpine meadows. If you continue up the hill by car from Longmire, in about 25 minutes you'll reach Paradise. There is a lodge here (definitely take a look inside, it's full of amazing woodwork) and a huge visitor center full of informational displays, a little cafe, and a gift shop. The real fun though is behind the buildings, on the Skyline Trail. I think I have only been to Mt. Rainier once without hiking the Skyline Trail. It’s my favorite not only because of the wildflowers, the insane views, and the proximity to the mountain proper, but because it is full of marmots. Marmots are absolutely my favorite animal, and the Skyline Trail is just full of them. From behind the visitor center, take the incredibly steep, paved path up toward the well signed trail. There are several junctions, but just keep following the Skyline Trail and/or the signs for Panorama Point. The steepness abates a bit once you arrive at the Deadhorse Creek Trail junction, and about here is where wildlife starts to come out. I’ve seen pheasants, grouse, deer, mountain goats, marmots, bears, and more chipmunks and ground squirrels than I can count on this trail over the multitude of times I’ve hiked it. The views are amazing the whole way up, even in cloud cover.
